To conclude the 2018 WS Racing Award Ceremony, John King, a WS Trustee, told everybody about a new prize which is called The Peter Hazlewood Trophy, named after a long-standing member of Chipstead Sailing Club who died during the year and, in whose memory, friends and family had made donations to Wealden Sailability. John reminisced how he had competed against Peter Hazlewood over a few decades in the Scorpion dinghy class of the club and recalled a man who always felt that the best sailors over the season should be appropriately recognised. So the WS Trustees, in discussion with Peter’s widow and family, had decided that this Trophy would be awarded to the best WS Racer over the whole season.
John King presented The Peter Hazlewood Trophy to its first recipient, Mike Blatchford who had shown his racing ability and tenacity by winning both the Spring and Summer Series covering 26 races between May and October 2018.
I’m Peter’s sister, Lynn, and very proud to have my dearly loved brother remembered this way. But PLEASE could you spell Hazlewood properly?
Thank you Lynn – mea culpa for not checking before I published!! Peter Ashwell
Well, if ever you needed another reason to volunteer for WS then the end of season Laying Up party was it! A brilliant (If a little cold maybe!) night organised by David McKee our chairman. He (with his lovely wife Sophie) prepared and served a fantastic supper of chicken or salmon with all the trimmings. He was also helped by Fay Stanley who organized the production by other volunteers of a fantastic selection of puddings. Lots of ladies did a brilliant job of serving the food and we all sat down to enjoy our meal and afterwards were entertained by the best Tommy Cooper-esque
comedian/magician that I’ve seen for years! Thank you Peter Coulture for finding him and for wife Jane for bringing a lovely atmosphere with your atmospheric decorations for the club room.
It was truly a great night and thanks again to ALL the helpers and food providers – great job! I hope some of you can post some pictures?
Looking forward to meeting up with you all next season.
